Variety 1. High Date with Wide Fraction.

The 1839-O quarter eagle is a historic and numismatically significant issue. It is the first gold coin of any denomination made at this mint and it is a one-year type with the only appearance of the Classic Head design from a New Orleans gold coin. It is not rare (I rate it is the 12th scarcest of 14 quarter eagles from this mint) but it is in strong demand from a variety of collectors.

This very lustrous piece was struck in green-gold as is typical for the issue. Rather than dispalying the often-seen frosty texture, this piece tends a bit more towards a semi-reflective finish. There is minimal wear visible and this pleasing “slider” has very clean surfaces with just some minor scuffs in the obverse fields.

There have been just four auction sales for this date in PCGS AU58 in the last five years. The last two trades were Stack’s 8/10: 921 at $8,050 and Heritage 12/08: 1836 at $7,475.  There are just 28 examples graded AU58 by PCGS versus 64 by NGC.

This issue is currently in strong demand as are virtually all mintmarked Classic Head gold coins.
