McCloskey-27. High Date, Wide Fraction variety.

The 1839-O is numismatically significant as the first gold coins truck at this mint. It is a one-year type and it is easily the most popular quarter eagle from New Orleans. It is clearly not the scarcest New Orleans issue of this denomination but nice AU’s are not easily located and the 1839-O is hard to find–and expensive–in Uncirculated.

This well struck piece shows medium orange-gold color with some deepening of the hues at the borders. Other than a few tiny ticks on the obverse, the surfaces are very choice and there is an interesting reverse die crack at 6:00 to 8:00 on the reverse.

There have been three auction records for AU55′s in the last year. An NGC AU55 brought $5,581 in April 2013, a PCGS AU55 (this exact coin) sold for $5,581 in September 2012 and an NGC AU55 brought $5,895 in May 2012. None of these three coins were CAC approved.

For many type and date collectors, an AU55 example of this issue is the perfect combination of price and quality.
