Winter 1, McCloskey-A. High date, Wide Fraction (R-3).

This is a numismatically significant issue as the first gold coin to be struck at the New Orleans mint, the first quarter eagle made at this facility and the only issue employing the Classic Head design. This gives the 1839-O a multiple level of demand not seen on many other issues from New Orleans. It is scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades and almost never offered for sale above MS62.

This coin has great visual appeal as it is not cleaned or dipped as with so many 1839-O quarter eagles. The color is a pleasing medium greenish-gold with some underlying red and orange hues; the reverse is more deeply toned than the obverse. The strike is excellent and this appears to be an early die state with less die lapping than usual and uncommonly bold detail at the centers.

No MS61 1839-O quarter eagles have been sold at auction since February 2009 and there are APR’s of $12,650 for this date in this grade dating back as far as march 2006.

I can think of few New Orleans gold coins which are in greater demand than the 1839-O quarter eagle and this is the first Uncirculated piece which I have been able to offer in close to two years.
