AFFORDABLE BUT ATTRACTIVE 1839-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 1-A.

The 1839-D is an important standalone quarter eagle from the Dahlonega mint. It is the first date of this denomination from Dahlonega and a one-year type. There are, at most, 250-300 known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range.

This well detailed example shows natural green-gold color with even hues seen on the obverse and the reverse. There are scattered, shallow marks consistent with the grade and the overall eye appeal is better than average for the date and the grade.

Only three PCGS AU50 1839-D quarter eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2010. The most recent sale was Stacks Bowers 8/14: 11055 which went for $6,756.

Along with the 1838-D half eagle, the 1839-D quarter eagle is an issue with high multiple levels of demand and it is becoming hard to locate an aesthetically pleasing PCGS graded piece for less than $7,500.
