The 1838-C quarter is numismatically significant as the very first issue of this denomination from the Charlotte mint. It is one of just two Classic Head quarter eagles from Charlotte and it is by far the scarcer of the two. Only 7,880 were struck and properly graded AU55′s are quite scarce.

This coin is surprisingly lustrous for the grade with the naked-eye appearance of an AU58. It is a nice light yellow gold hue and it is well struck for the issue with an uncommonly bold obverse center. There are some scattered marks in the obverse fields and a thin scratch on the reverse can be seen on the upper portion of the shield.

Only one PCGS graded AU55 example has sold at auction on over three years and it brought $11,163 as Heritage 11/12: 4734. The last NGC AU55 to sell at auction realized $9,988 as Heritage 8/12: 4459.

This coin has a greater multiple level of demand than nearly any other issue from the Charlotte mint and it is not often available in the higher AU grades in PCGS plastic.
