McCloskey-15.

Varieties of 1836 quarter eagles are known with a Script 8 and a Block 8. The latter is scarcer and it is a hard issue to locate in Uncirculated grades, especially above MS61 to MS62. As a date, the 1836 is a bit harder to find than the 1834 but it is more available than the 1835 and the underrated 1837.

This fully “new” example shows good luster with pleasing natural lemon-gold color on the obverse and reverse. The strike is slightly above average for the date with the customary weakness at the central obverse clearly seen. If not for a few light scratches in the left obverse field, this coin would grade at least a point higher.

Only two PCGS MS61 1836 Block 8 quarter eagles have sold at auction since the beginning of 2009.

An affordable example of the popular Classic Head type.
