RARE 1805 QUARTER EAGLE

BD-1, R-4.

Dannreuther estimates that 1,781 quarter eagles dated 1805 were struck and of these 100-150 are known, mostly in the AU to low Uncirculated range. Collector grade pieces are not often seen and those that are available tend to have been cleaned and/or show significant adjustment marks.

This example has been off the market for a number of years and it represents one of the few Choice Extremely Fine dates of this type which are available to collectors. It is choice and evenly worn with attractive natural green-gold color which deepens to reddish hues at the border and on much of the reverse. The strike shows typical weakness at the central reverse but it is still better detailed than on most while the surfaces are extremely clean with just a few light ticks in the obverse fields. Some faint adjustment marks are seen on the vertical stripes in the shield.

There are four APR’s for 1805 quarter eagles in this grade from May 2011 to September 2015 and these range from a low of $14,100 for an ANACS graded piece to a high of $15,525 for a nice but non-CAC PCGS graded coin.

This type is always in demand and there are not many CAC-quality coins available at this price point.

CAC has approved this one coin in EF45 with 13 finer.
