Coinage of the new Indian Head eagle began in 1907 but the branch mints disn’t produce coins until 1908. The 1908-S had a mintage of only 59,850 which is the second lowest of all the Indian Head eagles from this mint after the 1911-S (at 51,000). The 1908-S is a bit less rare in the lower Uncirculated grades than one might expected due to first-year-of-issue hoarding but it is very scarce in MS63, rare in MS64 and very rare in MS65 and above. there are a few superb pieces known including a glorious PCGS MS68 that Heritage sold for $149,500 in their January 2005 auction.

This borderline Gem is uncommonly clean and most decidely original with pleasing flashes of rose atop green-gold and lighter orange surfaces. The strike is sharp, as is typical for this issue and the surfaces are very clean with the exception of a few tiny marks in the fields which very narrowly remove this piece from consideration at the MS65 level and a $25,000+ price tag.

After years of neglect, the Indian Head eagle series is regaining its mojo and many new collectors are realizing that these coins are very good value in comparsion to Indian Head half eagles and St. Gaudens double eagles.

The last PCGS MS64 to sell at auction was back in September 2008, when Heritage sold a coin for $13,800.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
