This just-miss Gem example has fantastic eye appeal for the date. It is kept from a full MS65 grade solely by a shallow luster graze in the right obverse field which is not easy to see unless the coin is tilted towards a light source. The strike is totally hammered and as sharp as one could imagine for an eagle from this mint. Both sides show rich orange-gold color and lack any of the mint-made copper spots or grease stains seen from time to time on 1906-O eagles.

This is the final eagle made at this mint and it is by far the rarest New Orleans eagle produced in the 20th century. It is an issue that saw little circulation but most of the surviving examples are no finer than MS61 to MS62 due to excessive surface abrasions. There are around a dozen known in MS64 and another half dozen or so in MS65 to MS66.

The last finer example than this to be sold was an NGC MS66 that brought $25,300 in the Heritage 2/09 auction.

Here is a rare opportunity to acquire a virtual Gem Liberty Head eagle from this mint!

Ex Heritage 8/12: 4691 where it sold for $9,400.
