The 1889 is the rarest Liberty Head eagle struck at the Philadelphia mint after 1877. Only 4,485 were made and this date is almost never seen in grades less than AU55 or above MS61. I have never seen an example which graded higher than MS62 and only one or two at that level that wasn’t riddled with abrasions.

This moderately prooflike example has splashes of soft orange-gold color across the central obverse and at much of the right reverse. It is free of wear or friction and it show moderate, shallow abrasions in the fields as is typical of the date (I have never seen an 1889 eagle which was not abraded). The strike is sharp and the overall eye appeal is better than average for the date and grade.

The last PCGS MS61 1889 eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 1/12: 5099 which brought $4,113.

This is an overlooked date which doesn’t get the respect it deserves since so many of the post-1880 eagles from this mint are generic.
