In over two decades of grading coins, PCGS and NGC have encapsulated millions and millions of pieces. And, to this day, this is the sole 1888-O eagle graded MS64 ever slabbed by either service with none finer.

I first saw this coin about three years ago when its owner showed it to me at a convention. It wasn’t for sale then but with the market now very strong for one-of-a-kind Liberty Head eagles, I was able to obtain it and offer it for sale for the first time ever.

If you know this date, you are aware that it is not hard to find in MS60 to MS62 but it is scarce in properly graded MS63 and it is unique in MS64 and above. Nearly every Uncirculated 1888-O eagle shows excessive abrasions on the surfaces and this, in turn, impairs the luster. This remarkable example has just a few small marks and it appears to be about the only 1888-O that was put aside when it was struck and not exported to Europe or melted. It shows nice frosty luster and pleasing even medium orange-gold color as well.

If this coin were offered in an auction, there is no telling how much it would bring as I can think of a number ofNew Orleans gold specialists and Liberty Head eagle collectors who would battle head-to-head for the right to own this finest known piece. If you collect coins like this, you know just how important this 1888-O eagle is!

This is the only 1888-O eagle in this grade and the only one (obviously…) approved by CAC.
