Variety 1-A. Raised die lines on the throat of Liberty as on all known examples.

The 1884-CC eagle is a rare coin in properly graded AU58, especially with natural color and choice surfaces. It becomes very rare in Uncirculated with five or six known, mostly in the MS61 to MS62 range.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently found in Europe and it displays attractive deep natural green-god coloration on the obverse and the reverse. There is no real wear seen but there is enough bag friction on the high spots to narrowly knock this coin out of the Uncirculated classification. It is the nicest AU58 1884-CC eagle that I’ve handled in some time.

No PCGS AU58 1884-CC eagle has sold at auction since July 2005. Heritage 4/14: 6647, an NGC example without CAC approval, realized $9,400.

This is the best available quality for this date and it represents an important opportunity for the advanced collector of Carson City eagles.

CAC has approved four in this grade with two finer (both MS61).
