The 1882-O is the most available of the three semi-key With Motto dates from this era (the others are the 1880-O and the 1881-O). While fairly easy to locate in grades up through AU55, the 1882-O is rare in Uncirculated with an estimated dozen known. Most are in the MS60 to MS61 and the single finest is a PCGS MS63 which I sold in late 2014 to a specialized collector.

Based on remaining luster and lack of wear, this coin grades MS62 to MS63 but is has been rightfully knocked down to the MS60 level due to numerous abrasions. These marks are the result of the coin having been shipped loose in a bag and they are seen on virtually all of the 1880-O through 1882-O eagles. This example is frosty and shows nice rich yellow gold color. The most noticeable marks are visible in the left obverse field and below the eagle’s left facing wing.

No PCGS MS60 1882-O eagle has sold at auction since December 2010 when Heritage auctioned an example for $6,325. In March 2009, the same firm sold another piece in PCGS MS60 for $7,475.

This date is not often available in Uncirculated and this is only the second Mint State 1882-O eagle I have offered in the last three years.
