Only 8,350 1881-O eagles were made and with an estimated 200 or so known, this is not an easy date to locate. Most are seen in the EF and lower AU grades and a properly graded AU58 with choice surfaces and natural color is very scarce.

This “Euro” example has the appearance of a coin from an overseas source and while it has no real wear, the surfaces are abraded enough to cause it to be net graded as an AU58. Both the obverse and the reverse show nice natural medium green-gold color over lustrous surfaces and the strike is sharp.

Only two PCGS AU58 examples have been sold at auction since March 2010 and the last record is $6,325 for Heritage 1/11: 7095.

If available, an Uncirculated 1881-O eagle will run at least $12,500 and this makes a nice PCGS AU58 a very good value for most collectors.
