Due to the existence of a small hoard, the 1881-CC is the only Carson City eagle from this decade that is sometimes seen in Uncirculated. There are around fifteen to twenty known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS61 range. This date remains very rare in properly graded MS62 and above. The finest known, ex Battle Born/Lang/Eliasberg and graded MS64 by NGC, realized a stunning $97,750 when it was sold this summer by Stack’s Bowers.

This example is among the nicest of the many MS61 1881-CC eagles that I have handled over the years. It is fully lustrous and free of wear with lovely fiery rose and orange-gold toning seen on both sides. It shows light, scattered marks in the fields with the most noticeable of these positioned below stars nine and seven on the obverse.

It is my opinion that the NGC population figures for this date in MS61 and MS62 are highly inflated by resubmissions and I base this on the fact that only ten auction records for MS61′s (and just one in MS62!) are recorded since 2000. Given the fact that many of these are re-appearances, the NGC figures make no sense at all.

This is the best available quality for this date at less than five-figures and it would make a great addition to an advanced set ofeagles from the fabled Carson City mint.
