After a nearly two decade hiatus, production of eagles at the New Orleans mint resumed in 1879. The 1880-1882 issues are all in demand due to their low mintages and relative affordability. The 1880-O is the scarcest of the three and it is not often seen above the AU53 to AU55 range. Most of the 1880-O eagles in AU holders are scuffy, dipped and unappealing and choice, unmolested examples are rare.

This fresh-to-the-market 1880-O has the appearance of a coin graded at least AU53. It shows pleasing natural deep russet colors on both sides and the surfaces are much less abraded than usual for the issue. This is an important factor for the collector who eschews “baggy” coins as this is a date which is seldom seen with choice surfaces.

The last two PCGS AU50 1880-O eagles to sell at auction were both in old green label holders and they brought $4,230 in September 2015 and $3,966 in January 2014. A nice non-CAC NGC AU50 sold for $3,888 in April 2015.

This is likely the best available quality for the date at under $5,000.

CAC has approved two in this grade with eight finer.
