SCARCE 1880-O EAGLE

After a hiatus of nearly two decades, coinage of Liberty Head eagles resumed at the New Orleans mint in 1879. The 1880-O is the first of the scarce and popular trio of low mintage but affordable issues which are more in the price range of most collectors than the expensive 1879-O and 1883-O. Only 9,200 eagles dated 1880-O were produced.

As with many of the higher grade examples of this date, this piece was likely expatriated from Europe and it shows attractive natural lime-green central color framed by intense reddish-gold at the borders; the reverse has deeper color than the obverse. Both sides show considerable luster and only light wear. This piece would grade at least AU55 were it not for an old scrape in the left obverse field.

Only two AU53 examples of the 1880-O eagle have sold at auction since the Summer of 2011: this piece and a nice PCGS/CAC coin which realized $4,113 as Heritage 11/12: 5088.

This is the rarest collectible issue in the popular 1879-O to 1906-O With Motto Liberty Head eagle subset.
