With a mintage of 224,000, the 1879-S was produced in greater quantity than nearly all the previous San Francisco eagles struck since the opening of the mint in 1854. This issue is very common in lower grades and only moderately scarce in MS60 to MS62. In MS63 it is very rare and I have never personally seen one finer although PCGS does show one graded in MS64.

At first glimpse, this coin has the appearance of a Gem. Closer inspection shows a few delicate lines on the obverse as well as a fine thin vertical mark on Liberty’s cheek that may actually be “as made.” The surfaces are wonderfully clean and frosty which is unusual for a date that tends to be dull and heavily marked.

The present example is the only PCGS/CAC MS63 to ever sell at auction. The two most recent NGC MS63 APR’s are $7,475 (in January 2008) and $7,705 (in May 2006). Neither of these, of course, was CAC approved.

This is not a date/grade that I usually buy for inventory but this coin is so much nicer than usual for a pre-1880 SF eagle, I just had to buy it.

This is the only 1879-S eagle in MS63 that has been approved by CAC; none finer have as yet been approved.

Ex Heritage 11/12: 5086, where it brought $6,463.
