With a mintage of just 1,762, the 1879-CC has the lowest mintage of any Carson City gold coin. It is the second rarest eagle from this mint after the 1870-CC and it is interesting to note that the price for the former has rocketed in the last few years while levels for the nearly as rare 1879-CC have stayed relatively flat.

This evenly worn example shows good overall detail with light green-gold color on the obverse and somewhat deeper hues on the reverse which turn reddish-gold at the border. The surfaces show light, shallow abrasions as is typical for this issue and the eye appeal is considerably above average for the grade.

Stack’s Bowers 7/13: 4515, graded EF40 by NGC, sold for $23,500 and was inferior to the present example in my opinion.

Traditionally, the 1879-CC has sold for nearly the same price as the 1870-CC but it now brings about half as much in collector grades. This makes the 1879-CC an undervalued issue.
