The 1876-S is among the rarest With Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint. Only 5,000 were made and around five dozen are known, mostly in the VF-EF range. I have handled four other examples in the last three years but they have all graded AU53 to AU55 and have been priced in the low five figures.

This is an accurately graded piece with some luster visible below light yellow-gold and rose color. The strike is a bit soft at the centers with weakness seen on the curl above the ear of Liberty. The surfaces show an acceptable number of abrasions for the grade with nothing deep or detracting.

Two other non-CAC PCGS EF45 examples of this date sold for $7,050; one as Heritage 1/14: 6899 and one as Stacks Bowers 6/13: 2523.

This is good value for the date and it represents an affordable example of a truly scarce San Francisco eagle.
