The 1874 is the only Philadelphia eagle struck between 1862 and 1877 that is available from time to time in Uncirculated grades. It is found most often in MS60-61 and it is scarce in properly graded MS62. In any grade above this, it is rare although a few are known in MS64 or thereabouts. The best I have seen is a PCGS MS65 that brought $40,250 in Heritage’s 2004 ANA sale.

This fresh, frosty example shows rich orange-gold and rose color with some slightly deepening on the highlights. There are scattered marks as expected for the grade with the most noticeable of these clustered in the middle of the left obverse field.

The last two APR’s for this date in MS62 are $4,025 and $4,313, in 2011 and 2009 respectively. Both were PCGS graded.
