AFFORDABLE UNCIRCULATED 1874 EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1874 is the only Philadelphia eagle made between 1862 and 1877 which is seen with any degree of regularity in higher grades. It is sometimes available in the MS60 to MS61 grades but it becomes scarce in MS62, rare in MS63 and extremely rare above this.

This natural example shows slightly reflective surfaces, which is not typical for the issue. It hasn’t been dipped or processed and there is no wear on the high spots. The color is a pleasing medium yellow gold. There are small ticks on both sides consistent with the assigned grade.

No PCGS MS61 with CAC approval has ever sold at auction.

This is a date which I would suggest that the advanced collector not overspend on, given its relative availability. Taking this to heart, I think a nice MS61 is the best value grade for the 1874 eagle.

CAC has approved five in this grade with four finer.
