RARE, UNDERVALUED 1873-S EAGLE

Only 12,000 eagles dated 1873-S were struck and despite the fact that fewer than 100 are known, this date remains overlooked and undervalued. Most seen are in the EF40 to AU50 range and this date becomes extremely scarce in properly graded AU55. The finest known is a PCGS MS62 found in Europe in early 2015 and later sold for $47,000 as Stacks Bowers 5/15: 70.

This nice russet example has a natural appearance with flashes of orange-gold in the protected areas and some traces of luster, especially on the reverse. There are scattered marks on the obverse including a few areas of chatter in the right field and on the cheek while the reverse is choice.

Only two PCGS EF45 1873-S eagles have sold at auction since March 2011 and the last piece, with CAC approval but not as appealing as this one in my opinion, brought $3,902 as DLRC 7/15: 7234.

There are not many San Francisco eagles available for less than $4,000 which are as rare as the 1873-S and this coin represents excellent value for the savvy collector.
