The 1873-CC is among the rarest Carson City eagles. I rank it as the third rarest from this mint, after the 1870-CC and the 1879-CC and it seems to be undervalued in comparison to those two dates. It is seen most often in the VF-EF range and almost never with good eye appeal. Of the 4,543 struck only 60-70 exist.

If the grade “VF38″ existed, this coin would qualify as such. It is not quite a full EF40 but it is clearly nicer than the “average” Choice VF with very good detail, choice surfaces and pleasing natural medium russet color which deepens at the edges. There are some minor scuffs in the obverse fields and some of what appears to be wear on the eagle’s feathers is, in fact, typical weakness of strike.

There have been no VF35 examples of this date sold at auction since June 2003. The last EF40, graded by PCGS and offered as Heritage 8/13: 5882, appears comparable to the present example and it realized $23,500.

Rare date Carson City eagles are in strong demand and this would be a great match to the PCGS VF30 1872-CC that I sold recently.
