There are a number of rare, low mintage issues in the Philadelphia With Motto eagle series and the 1872 is certainly among the most prominent of these. Only 1,620 were produced and around 40-50 are known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. A small hoard of Uncirculated 1872 eagles was found years ago and I know of three or four high grade coins including two in MS64 holders; these haven’t been available for years.

This issue is well known for having excessively abraded surfaces and poor eye appeal. The present example shows relatively few marks and there is nice natural russet color seen on both sides. Some luster remains with a bit of prooflike flash seen in the recesses, especially on the reverse. For an issue that seldom comes “pretty,” this is a very good looking 1872 eagle.

An inferior NGC AU55 brought $11,750 as Heritage 1/14: 6895. No PCGS AU53 has ever been sold at auction.

If you collect PCGS graded rare date Liberty Head eagles you have little to select from in higher grades. PCGS shows a population of just two in AU53 and two in AU55 and the next grade available after that jumps up to MS62 (and a strong mid-five figure price tag).
