Only 4,600 were struck and the 1872-CC is one of the rarer early dates in the Carson City eagle series. I have seen estimates of as many as “80″ survivors but these seemshigh to me and I feel that the actual number is more in the 60-70 range with at least a quarter of these either being “no grades” or examples with some sort of problem. Choice, original examples are almost never seen.

This fresh-to-the-market coin was recently found in Europe where it is likely that it resided for the better part of a century after being shipped from the United Sates likely in payment of a foreign debt. It is evenly worn with pleasing medium to deep color and it shows more than enough detail to have been graded at least five points higher by PCGS. Some old lines can be seen when the coin is tilted but it lacks the dense abrasions so typical to this issue.

The last PCGS VF30 example of this date to sell auction was offered all the way back in October 2001. A PCGS VF25 brought $8,813 as Heritage 9/13: 6814.

Unless you have $30,000-40,000 on a nice AU, this 1872-CC will fir nicely into nearly an date set of Carson City eagles!
