Variety 1-B.

The 1872-CC is one of the really rare eagles from this mint with an estimated 60-70 known from the original mintage of just 4,600. This date is unknown in Uncirculated and it is very rare in AU grades with no more than a dozen properly pieces known. Only a handful of 1872-CC eagles exist with natural color and choice surfaces.

This is among the more original examples of this date I have seen. Unlike most, it is not bright and abraded with an unnatural appearance. It shows pleasing even russet color which becomes a bit deeper at the borders and there are just a few small ticks visible; none being worthy of explicit reference. The strike is well above average for the date and the eye appeal is excellent. In fact, I have seen AU53 and even AU55 1872-CC eagle which had inferior eye appeal to this piece.

No PCGS AU50 1872-CC eagles have sold at auction since Heritage 11/03: 769 which brought $19,550 in a market which was far less appreciative of Carson City gold and Liberty Head eagles than it is in 2015. In fact, there is an auction record of over $20,000 for an 1872-CC $10 in this grade as far back as August 2001 (!)

This is a rare and undervalued issue in all grades and it is not far removed from the Condition Census for the date.

Ex Heritage 2/14: 4195 where it brought $17,625 as an NGC AU50
