There are a number of overlooked issues in the With Motto Liberty Head eagle series and the 1870S is one of these. Of the 8,000 struck there are around 70-90 known with most in the EF and lower AU grades. Properly graded AU53 to AU55 coins are rare and the 1870-S is extremely rare in AU58. There is only one known in Uncirculated and it last sold as Bass III: 697 where it sold for a strong $36,800 in 2000.

I bought this coin from a knowledgeable dealer who purchased it in a 55 holder who tried to upgrade it to AU58. It’s clearly not a 58 but it’s just as clearly a solid AU55 with lovely natural russet color atop clean, unmolested surfaces. This date is typically seen bright and obviously processed with numerous abrasions to boot.

The only other AU53 example of this date to ever be approved by CAC sold for a strong $11,163 as Heritage 1/14: 6891. The present coin, is in my opinion, much nicer and it has been given a “plus” by NGC who agrees with my statement.

This is the most cosmetically appealing 1870-S eagle that I’ve handled since I sold a PCGS AU58 in an old green label holder back in April 2014.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
