Old Green Label holder.

The 1870 is one of the more available Philadelphia eagles from the Reconstruction era but it is still a scarce coin with fewer than 100 known from an original mintage of just 3,900 coins. It is generally seen in VF and EF grades and it is extremely rare above AU53 to AU53. I am not aware of a single Uncirculated example.

By today’s standards, this coin has the sharpness of an EF45 or even slightly finer but there is a thin scratch in the left obverse field. The naked eye appearance is excellent with nice natural color and lightly marked surfaces.

The last PCGS EF40 example of this date to sell at auction was offered twice by Heritage in 2011 and it brought $1,610 and $1,898, respectively. An NGC EF40 sold for $1,645 in Heritage’s 1/13 auction.

It is hard to imagine a scarcer Liberty Head eagle than this being available in a presentable grade for less than $2,000!
