The 1870-CC eagle is the second rarest gold coin from the Carson City mint after the legendary double eagle of this date. It is numismatically significant as the first year of issue CC eagle and it is exceptionally hard to find with original color and clean surfaces.

This is one of the nicer 1870-CC eagles I have handled and I have probably sold close to half of the four to five dozen which exist. Both sides are crisply detailed and show exceptionally attractive even honey-gold and russet color. Only a small number of 1870-CC eagles are not heavily processed and/or abraded like crazy and this piece lacks both of those negatives. There is a small rough patch in the left obverse field which appears to be some ancient scratches or marks but these hardly detract from the overall eye appeal.

The last PCGS EF40 to sell at auction was ex Heritage 6/08: 2147 at $40,255. But, since then, the market for this rarity has picked-up considerably and a PCGS VF35 just realized close to $43,000 as Heritage 1/14: 5491 while a PCGS F12 brought an incredible $35,250 in Stacks Bowers 7/13 sale.

This coin is not much less rare than an 1870-CC double eagle yet it is priced at a fraction of its big brother; a nice PCGS EF40 1870-CC twenty dollar gold piece would sell for close to $300,000 if available.
