Ex Browning (Dallas Bank Collection).

Of the 6,430 example struck, fewer than 75 1869-S eagles exist and many are in the VF-EF range. This date seems undervalued to me in regards to other San Francisco eagles from the earlier years of this decade and it is not easy to locate a piece which grades higher than AU50 to AU53.

This lustrous light yellow-gold example shows a typical strike for the issue with weakness on the radial lines within the stars and some minor flatness at the central reverse. The surfaces are moderately abraded with a few marks seen at the throat of Liberty. There is still a good amount of “meat” left on this coin and while it is not dirty and original, it has a pleasing overall appearance.

No EF45 example of this date has sold at auction since B+M 2/06: 585, graded by PCGS, which realized $6,325.

Ex Sotheby’s/Stack’s 10/01: 458 as a raw “XF” at $1,610, Dallas Bank Collection (Jeff Browning), acquired masse from Ted Naftzger in the late 1950′s.
