SCARCE 1868-S EAGLE

The 1868-S is a scarce date which is unfairly overshadowed by other With Motto issues from this mint such as the 1867-S and the 1869-S. Of the 13,500 struck, fewer than 100 are known and most are in the VF-EF range. This is an extremely hard date to find with original color and choice surfaces.

The obverse of this coin is very close to a full AU50 as it shows a good amount of luster beneath natural russet and rose-gold hues. The reverse is not as choice but it should be pointed out that the weakness seen on the neck of Liberty is strike and not wear.

Four PCGS EF45 1868-S eagles have sold at auction since early 2010 with prices ranging from a low of $2,350 to a high of $2,887. The current example appears to be nicer than any of these offerings.

At less than $3,000 how can you not be impressed by a genuinely scarce Wild West issue with fewer than 100 known in all grades combined?
