Only 3,090 eagles were struck for circulation by the Philadelphia mint in 1867 and there are an estimated 60-70 known, mostly in the EF40 to AU50 range. This date is nearly impossible to find with natural color and choice surfaces and this date seems to have been handled roughly in commerce as the majority of the survivors show deep, dense marks.

This is an uncommonly nice example for the grade with soft russet and green-gold color atop surfaces which are quite lustrous for the assigned grade. In fact, this piece would almost certainly grade at least EF45 were it not for some shallow bag abrasions on Liberty’s cheek as well as expected small ticks in the obverse fields. This is one of the only collector grade 1867 eagles I have ever seen which wasn’t scrubbed to death and made completely unnatural in appearance as a result.

No PCGS EF45 1867 eagle has sold at auction since 1999 and no PCGS 45 has crossed the block since 2004.

To my eyes, this affordable example is more desirable than the far more expensive typical baggy AU50 to AU53 which collectors are offered.
