This is a numismatically significant issue as it represents the first appearance of the S mintmark on a With Motto eagle. A total of 11,500 were struck but this is an issue with a low survival rate and it is believed that fewer than 75 are known with most in the VF-EF range. There are probably fewer than a dozen known in properly graded AU and I have personally never seen a piece which graded better than AU55.

This fresh-to-the-market example is the finest 1866-S With Motto eagle that I have owned in a number of years. It has better than average surfaces which is really saying something for this date; most are extensively abraded. The central coloration is a light to medium green-gold with rich splashes of orange at the obverse peripheries and across much of the reverse. There are a few small grease stains on the obverse, as made, which do not detract and some minor field abrasions which are consistent with the grade. The mintmark is tiny, as usual, and easy to overlook. For the date and grade, the eye appeal is far above average.

The last APR for an 1866-S With Motto eagle in PCGS AU53 was Stack’s 8/10: 1142 at $12,650. Since 2003, there have been just three PCGS AU53′s sold at auction and only two AU55′s from this service since 2000.

After years of neglect, rare Liberty Head eagles like this are finally recognized for their importance but prices, in my opinion, are still cheap compared to far more available Double Eagles of this era.
