No Motto variety.

The 1866-S No Motto is probably the second rarest eagle from this mint after the 1864-S. There were 8,500 struck but many were melted after it was announced that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was to be added to the reverse of all larger-sized United States gold coins. I believe that there are around four dozen known with many in very low grades. This is an extremely rare coin in AU with no more than six or seven known and the finest I am aware of is Bass IV: 689, graded AU58 by PCGS, which sold for $21,850 back in 2000.

This fresh-to-the-market example is as close to being Mint State as any 1866-S No Motto eagle which I have owned. It shows just the slightest amount of wear on the high spots and it is boldly detailed with the exception of a few of the stars which are weak on the radial lines. The surfaces show some satiny luster and are far cleaner than usual. The color is a light yellow-gold hue with some orange and rose hues seen in the recesses. For the date, the level of eye appeal is extremely impressive.

No AU58 examples of this variety have sold at auction since Bass IV: 689, as mentioned above. There are three other records in the 1990′s, between 1995 and 1998.

If you are a serious collector of Liberty Head eagles or a specialist in San Francisco gold, you are aware of the importance of this offering.
