RARE 1866 EAGLE, THE COINFACTS PLATE COIN

The 1866 eagle is numismatically significant as the first year in which the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appeared on the reverse of this denomination. Only 3,750 business strikes were made and around five dozen are known today with most in the VF-EF range. There are just one or two known in Uncirculated (both in the MS60 to MS61 range) and another dozen or so which qualify as About Uncirculated by today’s standards.

This medium yellow-gold and rose example is above-average for the date and grade with enough luster and lack of wear to suggest a 58 grade but with enough marks to make the current AU55 seem just right to me. A few noticeable scrapes around stars four and five merit description; the rest of the surfaces show fewer marks than normal. A small crescent of color on the denticles near stars one and two serves as immediate identification.

Including this piece, there are just three auction records for this date in PCGS AU55 since 1999. Heritage 2/14: 4181 bought $9,400 and had very funky deep orange colors on both sides.

This the Coinfacts plate coin for this issue and it is pedigreed to the Simpson-Hall collection of Liberty Head eagles.

If available, a PCGS AU58 would sell for over $20,000, making this nice AU55 a seemingly excellent value.
