Two varieties are known for 1865-S eagles: the Normal Date and the spectacular Inverted Date. While the latter is better known, the Normal Date is actually rarer and a strong case could be made for calling this the second rarest San Francisco eagle after the 1864-S. The 1865-S is extremely rare in properly graded AU with an estimated six or seven known, mostly in the AU50 range and never with original color and choice surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market coin was recently found in Europe and it is significant not only as the finest ever graded by PCGS but the best 1865-S Normal date eagle I have ever seen. It is undipped and completely original with nice even russet color over surfaces which retain some luster (!) and are not as scuffy as usual for the variety. The strike is as always seen with weakness at the reverse center and a slightly concave appearance on the obverse. The quality is “off the charts” for the issue.

There are no auction records for an AU53 1865-S eagle since one NGC coin sold in October 2006. Five NGC AU55′s were sold between 1997 and 2010 and none remotely compared to this coin.

If you are a serious collector of San Francisco gold, Civil War rarities or Liberty Head eagles, I don’t need to remind you of the significance of this coin.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU53 with none finer. Furthermore, this is the only example of this variety approved by CAC in ANY grade.
