865/Inverted 186, designated by PCGS.

This amazing variety is the result of the die sinker accidentally entering the three digit date logotype (186) upside down then correcting it after realizing his error. The 1865-S Inverted date eagle is a rare coin but it is actually seen more than the overlooked Normal date variety. There are around 45-55 known, mostly in lower grades. Properly graded AU examples are rare with probably fewer than ten known and this variety is unique in Uncirculated (a PCGS MS64 was found on the S.S. Brother Jonathan).

This is a “meaty” coin for the date and grade with enough luster remaining to more than justify the assigned grade. As is often seen, the strike has a somewhat “sunken” appearance with the most flatness seen at the central reverse. The color is a pleasing natural yellow and rose-gold while the surfaces are choice for the issue with fewer detracting marks than normal.

Only one PCGS AU50 example has sold at auction since 2001 and it realized $14,950 as Stack’s 8/10: 1140. A recolored PCGS AU53 sold for a strong $27,025 as Heritage 3/14: 30367.

This date has multiple levels of demand as it appeals to San Francisco gold specialists, Liberty Head eagle collectors, overdate enthusiasts and Civil War gold aficionados.

Ex Heritage 12/11: 4362 (as NGC AU50) where it sold for $13,800.
