The word “rare” gets thrown around alot in the numismatic hobby and it is overused. But the 1865 eagle is truly a rare coin. There are around four to five dozen known from the original mintage of 3,980 business strikes and most seen are in the VF30 to EF45 range. In About Uncirculated, there are likely fewer than 12-15 1865 eagles and the finest is a single MS63 graded by PCGS which I have never seen. This is the first 1865 eagle that I have handled in close to three years.

As with nearly all known 1865 eagles, this piece is semi-prooflike. It is not very heavily abraded as typically seen and there are splashes of rich orange-gold color on both sides. This piece is fresh to the market and it comes from the same source as the business strike 1865 half eagle graded AU55 by PCGS which I bought at the recent FUN show.

The last AU53 example of this date to appear at auction was Stack’s 8/10: 1139, graded by PCGS, which sold for $9,775. In the last ten years, there have been five auction appearances for the 1865 eagle in this grade.

Civil War eagles of the quality and rarity seldom are offered and the serious collector should avail himself of this remarkable opportunity.
