The 1862 is the second most available Civil War eagle after the 1861. It is still a scarce coin as one would predict given its small original mintage of 10,960 business strikes. There are around 100 known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU55 examples are scarce although I do note a few more sales of these in the last few years than in the previous decade.

This fresh-to-the-market example is lightly worn and very lustrous with nice medium orange-gold color. As on nearly all known 1862 eagles, the surfaces are a bit “chewy” but they actually show fewer detracting marks than normal. The strike is better than expected for the issue with very bold centers. Overall, this is a nice looking coin with good eye appeal and considerable “body.”

The last PCGS AU55 1862 eagle to sell at auction brought $8,519 as Heritage 4/14: 6608. AN NGC AU55 brought $9,400 as Heritage 2/14: 5397. In my opinion, neither of these two coins was as choice as the current piece.

This issue has multiple levels of demand as it is sought-after by Civil War collectors and Liberty Head eagle specialists.
