The 1862 is the second mot available Civil War era eagle after the common 1861 but it is still a scarce coin with around 100 known, mostly in EF40 to AU50 grades. I am aware of two in Uncirculated (an NGC MS63 and a PCGS MS62) as well as four or five graded AU58. Properly graded AU55′s are essentially the best available quality for the issue.

This is an exceptional, fresh-to-the-market example from a European source with superb deep green-gold and fiery orange hues on the obverse and the reverse. This piece seemingly never entered circulation and the five points of “wear” it has is actually bag friction from being shipped loose from the mint to a bank. The surfaces are lightly abraded and the eye appeal of this coin is exceptional for the date and grade.

The last NGC AU55 to trade at auction was a nice non-CAC piece which brought $9,350 in an 11/14 Great Collection sale.

I was offered a PCGS/CAC AU58 example of this date last year for over $30,000 which I didn’t like as much as I do this coin. An impressive 1862 eagle which should appeal equally to Liberty Head eagle collectors or Civil War gold specialists.

CAC has approved six in this grade with four finer (three in 58 and one in 60).
