The 1862 is the second most available eagle from the Civil War era after the 1861 but it is a scarce and currently in-demand issue with an estimated 100 or so known from the original mintage of 10,965 business strikes. This issue is seen most often in VF and EF grades and properly graded AU examples are extremely scarce. Before the discovery of a few Uncirculated examples (including a single MS64) on the S.S. Republic, this date was unique in Uncirculated (Bass IV: 681, graded MS62 by PCGS).

This fresh-to-the-market example is very lustrous and shows little in the way of actual wear. The warm rose-gold and medium orange surfaces do have their share of abrasions including a few small ticks on the cheek of Liberty but none of these are terribly deep or detracting.

Two NGC AU55 examples have sold at auction in 2014. Both brought $9,400; one as Heritage 2/14: 5397 and the other as Heritage 1/14: 6877. A really choice PCGS AU58 brought $28,200 as Heritage 3/14: 10666.

This date is essentially unavailable in grades higher than AU55 and for most Civil War eagle specialists, this nice example represents the best available quality.
