All five of the San Francisco Civil War era eagles are rare (one, the 1864-S, is extremely rare). The 1861-S is actually one of the more available of this quintet but there are still only 70-80 known from an original mintage of 15,500. Most are seen in VF-EF grades and properly graded AU examples are very rare in spite of seemingly high NGC and PCGS populations. This date is unique in Uncirculated, the sole coin being a recently graded NGC MS61.

The present example is a choice, original piece with excellent surfaces and surprisingly good overall detail. Both sides show nice medium green and orange-gold colors which are “right” for the issue. I haven’t seen many 1861-S eagles that weren’t cleaned or processed and this is a rare coin with this degree of eye appeal.

The last APR for an NGC AU53 is this exact coin which brought $8,813 as Heritage 9/12: 4983. There have been just three AU53′s sold at auction since 2004, all of which have been slabbed by NGC.

Nice 1861-S eagles are available on average at around once per two or three years. When will your next chance be?

CAC has approved this one example in AU53 with two finer (AU55 and MS61).

Ex Heritage 9/12: 4983 where it brought $8,813.
