Each of the ten dollar gold pieces struck by the San Francisco mint during the Civil war years is rare. The 1861-S has a mintage of 15,500 and there are an estimated 70-80 known, mostly in lower grades. A properly graded AU50 to AU53 is quite rare and this issue is unique in Uncirculated (an NGC MS61 which last sold for $67,563 as Heritage 8/12: 5390).

This undipped, uncleaned example has the luster and body of an AU55 but it has been net graded due to a fine staple scratch on the obverse which runs from ear the third star into the face of Liberty and onto the ear lobe. The strike is excellent and the reverse, by itself, grades close to AU58 based on the lack of apparent wear and the sharp detail.

Four AU53 examples of this date have sold at auction since May 2008 including this coin; see below for the pedigree.

In my opinion, this date is undervalued in comparison to many of the other Civil War eagles from both mints.

Ex Heritage 9/14: 3443, where it sold for $7,638.
