The 1861 is, by far, the most available Civil War eagle as its comparatively high mintage would suggest. It is generally seen in EF and AU grades. In Uncirculated, there are an estimated two dozen known with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. The finest known is a remarkable PCGS MS66 which sold for $50,600 back in November, 2000 as Bass III: 679.

This attractive, fresh to the market example is characterized by rich, natural orange-gold color. It is undipped and very close to being an MS62; it is held back, in my opinion, by the presence of some minor ticks in the left obverse field. Both sides are well defined and this is a truly attractive example with a “freshness” about it which would be hard to improve on in today’s market.

Only two PCGS MS61′s have been auctioned since June 2008–none with CAC approval and the last piece brought $7,050 as Heritage 1/14: 6874. An NGC MS61 also sold for this amount as Heritage 11/12: 5076.

This coin should appeal to numerous collectors: Civil War specialists, type collectors looking for a nice No Motto Liberty Head eagle or date collectors focusing on the challenging Liberty Head eagle series.

CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
