The 1860-O is a numismatically significant issue as it is the final eagle struck at the New Orleans mint until 1879 and it is the last coin with the No Motto design. Only 11,100 were struck and of the 125-150 known, most grade in the EF40 to AU50 range.

This slightly prooflike example is struck in pale green-gold and there is some reddish color on the relief details; a reverse copper spot can be seen within the vertical lines in the shield. As is typical for the date, there are flat areas on the radial lines in the stars but the surfaces are less abraded than normal; especially the obverse.

The last 1860-O eagle graded AU55 by NGC to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 2/13: 4260 which brought $4,406. A PCGS AU55 in the Heritage 7/12 sale realized $4,888. The present example is clearly superior to both of these.

After years of neglect, the 1860-O eagle has finally been appreciated as a scarce, desirable issue.
