The 1859-O is the rarest No Motto eagle from the New Orleans mint. Only 2,300 were struck and an estimated 45-55 are known. For most collectors, the price of this date places it out of reach and in affordable collectors grades, the 1859-O is almost unheard of.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently located in a non-collector’s array of coins from a source in the Deep South. While well worn, this is a genuinely pleasing example which lacks the marks or signs of harsh cleaning(s) so often seen on 1859-O eagles. Both sides show nice medium yellow-gold and russet color and the reverse has a considerable amount of dirt caked in the lettering.

Of the 37 1859-0 eagles graded by PCGS (and this number is likely inflated by resubmissions) only four grade VF and three of these are VF35′s.

I never thought I’d be able to offer a PCGS/CAC problem-free example of this date at well under $10,000 and it is likely that once this coin is sold (which I predict will be quickly) another example will not be readily forthcoming!

CAC has approved one with two finer for a total of three for the date.
