As with all P mint gold issues from this year, the 1859 eagle is a scarcer coin than its mintage would suggest. There are a few hundred known from the original 16,093 struck with most in the VF-EF range. This date is scarce in the lower AU grades and rare in AU55 to AU58. I know of just two Uncirculated examples, both PCGS MS61: the Bass II: 1468 coin at $12,650 and Stacks Bowers 3/11: 6713 which brought a strong $25,875.

This bright, lustrous example is reasonably well struck although there is some weakness on the curl above the ear of Liberty as well as on the radial lines of the stars. The surfaces are cleaner than normal with just a moderate number of scattered ticks; the most noticeable are a few above and just to the right of the 9 in the date.

There have been but three AU58′s sold at auction (all in NGC holders) since 2009 with the highest price of these being $5,750 set by an SS Republic example.

This date is essentially unavailable in grades higher than this yet nice AU58′s remain surprisingly affordable.

Ex Heritage 1/09: 5542, where it brought $3,170.
