RARE 1858-S EAGLE

Only 11,800 eagles were made at the San Francisco mint in 1858 and it is likely that fewer than 75 exist, mostly in lower grades. I regard this date as one of the truly underappreciated No Motto eagles and it is demonstrably rarer than other dates which sell for significantly higher prices.

This well-worn example likely served as a pocket piece as it is clean and problem free with deep peripheral color which nicely contrasts the lighter centers. All of the letters in LIBERTY are clear and there is some separation seen in the feathers. While many low grades U.S. gold coins are unattractive, this piece has really good overall eye appeal.

A PCGS VG10 example without CAC approval, sold for $2,233 as Heritage 11/13: 8642.

At this price point, it would be hard to imagine another No Motto San Francisco eagle from the Gold Rush era which is better overall value.

CAC has approved one in this grade with three finer for a total of just four for the entire issue.
