Despite its obvious rarity, the 1858-S is a curiously overlooked issue in the San Francisco eagle series. It is not as rare as the 1859-S or 1860-S but it is far harder to find than the 1856-S and 1857-S. There are around 60-70 1858-S eagles known with most in the VF-EF range. It is likely that fewer than 10 properly graded AU’s exist and I have never seen or heard of one which graded higher than AU55.

Splashes of original orange-gold color can be seen on the obverse and the reverse and this is unusual as nearly every known 1858-S has been vigorously scrubbed. There is a good deal of luster present and the surfaces lack and serious marks. This is the first 1858-S eagle which I have owned in over three years and it baffles me as to why this isn’t a $7,500+ coin in this grade.

Only two PCGS EF45′s have sold at auction since 2009 and neither was approved by CAC.

A very pleasing example of a date which I have long believed was among the more underrated and undervalued 19th century gold issues.

CAC has approved one in this grade and one finer (AU50). Only four examples of this date have been approved by CAC.
